12 Things I Always Have in my Freezer {& Chicken Noodle Soup recipe}

homemade chicken noodle soup

A recent weekend found both Husband and me feeling a bit under the weather – coupled with a few of those gray days where the only thing that sounds good is a big blanket, a good book, and the occasional movie. And of course, Chicken Noodle Soup.

One of the many benefits of having a well-stocked – and well-organized, freezer {more on that soon!} is that you can pull together a healthy dinner quickly, without having to rely on pre-packaged foods that most likely aren’t as tasty or good-for-you as you can make yourself. And thanks to a little extra effort most every time I’m in the kitchen, I had everything I needed to make a great tasting soup, without bundling up and dragging myself to the store. Organizing :: Magazine Recipes

recipe org - mags

A few months back, I shared my addiction to food magazines here.  I’ve not done the math on what this little indulgence costs, but hey, I’m subscribing, and not paying newsstand prices, so that’s good, right?  More than once I’ve been asked how I organize the {seemingly} hundreds of recipes I tear out of them. Apped’oeuvre Place-Cards {Entertaining Tip}

One of my favorite kinds of gatherings to throw is a cocktail party.  I like being able to serve a bunch of different apped’oeuvres, and not be tied to the timing and formality of a sit-down dinner.  (Yes, I know “apped’oeuvre” is not a real word.  But I want it to be…)

My Spice Drawer {or, I wonder if I have OCD…}

spice drawer

When I show my spice drawer to people, they have one of two reactions — either envy, or horror.  If the picture above makes you lean toward envy, read on.  If not, perhaps you’d enjoy another post better.

When we remodeled last year, I went into heavy purge and organize mode.  (BLISS!)  The result is a kitchen in which, after 17 years, there’s a place for everything, and everything is in its place.

(I can’t say the same about my closet, or sock drawer.  Apparently, I have “selective OCD”.)

“Hello, my name is Morgan, and I’m addicted to food magazinesŠ…”

magazine mania

It could be worse. I could be addicted to cigarettes or heroin.

When I reach inside my mailbox and find that one (or more) of my food periodicals has found it’s way there, I am giddy.

But do I read it immediately? Oh no!

Like the meals they highlight, these gems are meant to be savored. Slowly. And with wine. I save them up for an evening I’m alone (either literally, or because Husband is catching up on sports on TV). I pour a glass of Pinot Noir, and slowly open the cover. Continue Reading →

Larder Love

Pantry

If I could move a cot into my pantry and live, I just might. It’s my favorite part of our kitchen remodel — and the part I probably spent the most time on. Planning. And measuring. And redesigning.

When we started the project, Husband said that he didn’t really like things out on the kitchen counters. Given I had a juicer, an espresso machine and my new Vitamix always at the ready, this was going to take some creative problem-solving. Continue Reading →
